Dues Assessment Vote
Local | Friday, 13-Apr-07 13:18:47

The final tally of votes for the special dues assessment for all members of Nebraska Public Employees, Local 251 for the months of April thru December of 2007 is as follows:

173 accepted
68 rejected

As a result of this vote, dues will increase to $44.00 per month until December 2007. The $4.00 increase will be applied to back AFSCME per capita, legal and professional expenses.

Dues Assessment Vote
Local | #HOUR#, #TOPIC#-#NUMDAY#-#MONTH# #MINUTES#:#YEAR#:52

After reviewing Local 251’s financial standing, the Executive Board has recommended to call for a vote of a Special Assessment of dues totaling $4.00 per month per member for the months of April 20#MONTH# thru December 20#MONTH#.

This recommendation was presented at the rank and file meeting February 27th. Motion was made and seconded to proceed with a vote for a Dues Assessment.

This recommendation results from a significant increase in Local 251’s operating expenses, specifically:

(1)The AFSCME Per Capita Tax, which has increased from $6.95 per member in 1999 to $10.75 in January 20#MONTH# and

(2)The Omaha Federation of Labor Per Capita Tax, which has increased from 45˘ per member in 1996 to 65˘ in 2003 (with an additional increase expected this year).

(3)Legal and Professional fees resulting from CIR, Arbitration and disciplinary cases.

The proposed increase of $4.00 per month per member will be used exclusively for the reduction of our ever expanding professional fees, legal fees and per capita taxes.

This vote is critical in securing the funds to move ahead with an upcoming District Court Case as well as future and current Arbitration costs, which can and may hinder future representation of members.

For voting date, location and times, please contact the Union office

Employee Free Choice Act
Local 251 | Thursday, 15-Feb-07 11:51:33

Help rebuild America's middle class by restoring workers'
freedom to bargain for better wages, benefits and working conditions. Join the Employee Free Choice Act week of action and spread the word.

Please take a quick moment right now to download a one-page flier about the Employee Free Choice Act and share it with friends, neighbors, family and co-workers. Click the link below:

http://www.unionvoice.org/ct/_d1FwQ91Rqjm/

Most of us don't get CEO paychecks and we're not going to get rich on our stock portfolios. For most of us, the best opportunity to get ahead economically is by joining a union so we can bargain with our employers for better wages and benefits.
But the current system is broken. Every day, corporations intimidate, harass, coerce and even fire people who try to form unions and bargain. Employers use these tactics very successfully to hold down working families' living standards.

The Employee Free Choice Act would change that by strengthening penalties on companies that coerce or intimidate employees, establishing mediation and binding arbitration when the employer and workers cannot agree on a first contract and enabling employees to form unions when a majority signs authorization cards.

This is going to be the fight of our lives. Corporations will not willingly give up the power they have today to deny workers'
freedom to choose for themselves whether to gain union representation and bargain. We have to take every opportunity we have to win votes in Congress for the Employee Free Choice Act.

Next week, your members of Congress will be in their district offices. And that's where you can find them during the Employee Free Choice Act week of action. Use our flier to encourage people you know to contact their members of Congress and urge them to support the Employee Free Choice Act.

Please download our Employee Free Choice Act flier now and share it with others who care about helping working families get ahead. Click the link below:

Local 251 vs. City of Omaha
Local 251 | Wednesday, 29-Nov-06 08:21:50

Nebraska Public Employees, Local 251 has filed a lawsuit in Douglas County District Court. The lawsuit is a result of the City of Omaha’s practice of hiring retired employees, of whom collect their pension, as part-time/seasonal employees. We feel that this practice denies our members/full-time employees promotional opportunities, not to mention the stress it adds to the pension system.

An article detailing the lawsuit was published in the Omaha World Herald on Tuesday, November 28th, 2006. You may access the article at www.omaha.com , Metro/Region section.

Also, something else to keep your eye on; the City of Omaha pushing for a City-County merger. Article published Wednesday, November 29th, 2006 in the Omaha World Herald.

Katrina - Ugent Donations Needed
Local 251 | Friday, 02-Sep-05 08:51:58

Dear Working Families e-Activist,

No drinking water. No food. No electricity. No homes to return to. No workplaces to go back to. No schools for the children.

Most of us cannot imagine the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.
The hurricane left behind massive, unprecedented and enduring needs. Immediate needs for rescue, safe drinking water, shelter and food are staggering. The longer-term needs--help for working families whose livelihoods were washed away, for the injured and for survivors--are hard to imagine.

Those of us fortunate to be outside the hurricane's path must help--and we must help now. The AFL-CIO's Union Community Fund has established a special Hurricane Relief Fund that will target help where it's needed most by working families. We are working with the labor federations in affected states and with relief organizations to make sure your contributions help brother and sister union members whose lives have been turned upside down.
Please click on the link below to make your tax-deductible contributione now:

http://www.unionvoice.org/ct/yp1FwQ91jPtn/

Please give, and please give generously. We must match this human disaster with our compassion, and match our caring with contributions that will make a difference for traumatized working families now and during the long rebuilding process.

Caring about each other is what marks us as union members and working family activists. Let's put our values to work right now.

As an activist for working families, you take actions every day to help improve the living standards of working people like yourself. This is a moment when your commitment is put to the test. Will you respond by opening your heart AND your wallet?
Please click on the link below to send your tax-deductible contribution to this hurricane relief fund for working families:

Please act now. And forward the link below to urge others you know to contribute as well:

Thank you for doing your part for working families during this national tragedy.

P.S. Please forward this e-mail to your co-workers, friends and family.

Form a Union? Let Workers Choose!
Local 251 | Tuesday, 19-Apr-05 12:14:04

Some 57 million workers in America say they would join a union tomorrow if they could. Today, a bill was reintroduced in both houses of Congress that would level the playing field for workers trying to form unions. It's the bipartisan Employee Free Choice Act and it could make a world of difference for working people trying to gain a voice on the job. Please click the following link to urge your members of Congress to support it:

http://www.unionvoice.org/campaign/Support_EFCA

The bill is being introduced into the 109th Congress by Sens.
Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.) and Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) and Reps.
George Miller (D-Calif.) and Pete King (R-N.Y.).

The Employee Free Choice Act says when a majority of employees in a workplace decide to form a union, they can do so without the bitter war employers now wage to block them. Every 23 minutes a worker is fired or discriminated against for exercising the basic freedom to decide whether to form a union.
On paper, U.S. labor law and international standards give workers the legal right to form unions--but in the real world, employers block that right day after day. So 57 million workers who want the benefits of union membership can't get them.

Please do your part to restore workers' freedom to decide for themselves whether to have a union. Send a message now urging your members of Congress to support the Employee Free Choice Act. Click here:

http://www.unionvoice.org/campaign/Support_EFCA

The Employee Free Choice Act is a commonsense approach to restoring workers' freedom to form unions. It would require employers to recognize the union once a majority of workers signed cards authorizing union representation. It also would provide for mediation and arbitration of first-contract disputes and authorize stronger penalties for employers that violate the legal rights of workers seeking to form unions and negotiate first contracts.

By the time Congress adjourned last year, 38 senators and 210 U.S. representatives had signed on as co-sponsors of the Employee Free Choice Act. That's a good start, but we need far more supporters to win this fight for working families. Please click the following link to urge your U.S. senators and representative to support this important legislation:

http://www.unionvoice.org/campaign/Support_EFCA

Thank you for all you do for working families.

In solidarity,

Working Families e-Activist Network, AFL-CIO April 19, 2005

AFSCME in the public service
Local 251 | Friday, 04-Feb-05 07:09:10

Sisters and Brothers:

Last night in his State of the Union address, President Bush announced his plan to privatize Social Security for all working Americans -- young and old. This is part of a national, right-wing campaign to dismantle the most successful government program ever enacted and undermine retirement security for all Americans. On Monday, the President will outline his budget proposal. It will include deep cuts to important domestic programs that will reduce services and cause layoffs of state and local government employees.

The President told Americans not to be misled, and we won't be. We're fighting back with a campaign to pressure lawmakers to protect Social Security and important public services.

As part of our AFSCME campaign, you'll soon be receiving a special issue of our Public Employee magazine that contains details about the assault on Social Security and on collective bargaining rights in the states. You'll get e-mails with important updates, as well as opportunities for you to take action. We'll be asking you to sign an online petition to protect what we've earned. In addition, we'll be holding local forums in communities across the country. I hope you will join us in this important effort.

Right now you can click on the following link to download a fact sheet on the Bush Social Security privatization plan: What You Should Know About Social Security Privatization.

Together, we'll strengthen Social Security and the economy the right way. We'll protect our retirement and make sure that the budget is not balanced on the backs of working people, our families and our communities. Together, we will win.

In solidarity,

Gerald W. McEntee
International President
